Case Study: Building and Setting Up the API Factory

Challenge​

The client needed to establish a new API Factory to accelerate delivery, improve governance, and provide a scalable model for API development. This required not only setting up the technical environment but also building confidence in the model, establishing new ways of working, and enabling handover into business-as-usual (BAU) operations.

Approach​

We were engaged to design, build, and operationalise the API Factory. Key activities included:

  • Work sourcing & confidence building: Built relationships across the business to source new work and establish trust in the API Factory model.
  • Platform set-up: Configured API Factory toolsets on the Azure Platform, adopting both Kanban and Scrum methods to support flexible delivery.
  • Team establishment: Set up a delivery team and developed strong working relationships with a remote vendor partner in India.
  • Collaboration with security & architecture: Partnered with Cyber Security and Architecture teams to deliver improvements and reusable utilities.
  • Coaching & guidance: Provided ideas and hands-on coaching to improve delivery practices and embed better ways of working.
  • Documentation & handover: Established clear documentation and transitioned support processes to another vendor.
  • Root cause analysis: Conducted analysis of existing technology processes to address systemic issues.
  • Handover to BAU: Transitioned the API Factory to an identified API Lead, ensuring smooth operation in BAU mode.

Outcomes​

  • API Factory established and operational on the Azure platform.
  • Sustainable delivery model embedded, using Kanban and Scrum.
  • Improved collaboration with vendors, security, and architecture teams.
  • Reusable utilities and improved processes implemented for long-term efficiency.
